Dr Efraín Zarazúa Arvizu successfully completed the Innovation-to-Commercialisation of University Research (ICURe) programme, funded by Innovate UK, to identify commercial opportunities for our technology development.
The Horsfall Lab was Awarded with the BBSRC Impact Acceleration Accounts grant to enable translational and commercialisation activities and engagement with industry, policy making bodies or other stakeholders.
Louise been awarded almost £250,000 to develop a novel biological platform for the more sustainable production of chemicals, materials and fuels from renewable resources.
This work will lead to the development of unique new products, derived from wastes and by-products, and demonstration of their cost-efficient and energy-saving production using novel biomanufacturing technologies.

Louise has contributed the Microbiology Society’s Sustainable Future project, which aims to highlight the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to members and empower them to use their research to evidence and impact the goals. For the 4th year in a row, the Horsfall group were at St Mary’s Primary School Melrose for Bang Goes The Borders. These years stand entitled “Fantastic Plastics & The Science of Sustainability” featured everything from smelly things and Lego to rockets and 3D Printers.

Matt has made it to the final of the Innovation Cup, part of the Launch, Inspire Grow competition held by the University of Edinburgh. The competition is designed to encourage entrepreneurship in the university, and we hope to use the opportunity to help us form a company to use our research for real-world applications. The finalists will give presentations on the 9th June, competing for a £5000 prize for their businesses.

Matt and Mike were present for the unveiling of a piece of art based on the CL4W project at the Victoria and Albert museum put together by artists Michael Burton & Michiko Nitta in collaboration with the CORE project. The event went brilliantly and was even featured on the EPSRC’s homepage. More pictures can be found HERE.
This evening Louise was presented with the Chancellor’s Rising Star Award, this annual award honours an early career academic appointed to the University within the last five years. Louise was selected as the 2015 awardee for her contribution to teaching, research and industrial engagement in the field of Synthetic Biology… and is over the moon!
