Second Year Ph.D Students Posters

Our second year Ph.D students, Efrain, Miguel and Charlotte, all presented their posters to the department.... and Efrain won best scientific poster. Congrats Efrain!

New Starts

A warm welcome has been given to our three new PhD students. Ian, Lukas and Zak. They come to work on Desulfovibrio, anaerobic digestion and lignin degradation respectively.

'Bang Goes The Borders' and 'Doors Open Day'

The lab was out in full force spanning two public outreach events across Scotland, showcasing our passion for public engagement. The events included guess that smell, playing with Lego, and giving commands to bacteria, all with a synthetic biology theme - of course.

Destination Singapore For SB 7.0

Nick travelled to Singapore to present a poster on his work at the 7th international conference in Synthetic Biology. Some sightseeing after the conference was a must!

Horsfall Lab In College Prize

Nick and Matt are part of the team who won the Head of College Prize for public engagement for their management of the iGEM team from last year. Both are thrilled to have won.

Worldwide Distilled Spirits Conference 2017

Charlotte and Nick attended the 6th WDSC conference in Glasgow. Charlotte presented a poster and Nick gave an oral presentation about their work which generated good interest. Friendly atmosphere and good networking opportunities made this a conference to remember!

Burton Nitta Visit

The Lab is delighted to have Michael and Michiko back to present their work at the Art and Design school. While they were here, they donned lab coats and had a go at some science!

Virginia attended WW-Net at the Botanic Gardens Edinburgh to learn about the different uses of forestry resources including lignin valorisation.


Matt attended the event held at Imperial College, the talks included one from Lord David Prior (Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy) where he compared SynBio to the Industrial Revolution and how it could lead to higher prosperity.

Virginia attended the Defense Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) meeting in Birmingham, showcasing some of her work on combining nanoparticles and lignin degradation.
