Louise and Mike both won Staff awards for their roles in the School of Biological Sciences promoting wellbeing and sustainability (respectively).

For the 4th year in a row, the Horsfall group were at St Mary’s Primary School Melrose for Bang Goes The Borders. These years stand entitled “Fantastic Plastics & The Science of Sustainability” featured everything from smelly things and Lego to rockets and 3D Printers.

The lab is pleased to welcome Dina, who starts her PhD project fighting corrosion using bacteria-made nanoparticles.
The lab welcomes Yuta and Matthew as new PhD students who both join the lab to both work on Bioremediation projects.
We are very excited to have in our possession a Monolith Pico (NanoTemper) for all our metal-binding-protein-thermophoretic needs.
Matt has made it to the final of the Innovation Cup, part of the Launch, Inspire Grow competition held by the University of Edinburgh. The competition is designed to encourage entrepreneurship in the university, and we hope to use the opportunity to help us form a company to use our research for real-world applications. The finalists will give presentations on the 9th June, competing for a £5000 prize for their businesses.
The Horsfall Group has been featured in an article by the BBC looking at whether technology can help tackle the worlds waste problems.
Matt and Mike were present for the unveiling of a piece of art based on the CL4W project at the Victoria and Albert museum put together by artists Michael Burton & Michiko Nitta in collaboration with the CORE project. The event went brilliantly and was even featured on the EPSRC’s homepage. More pictures can be found HERE.
This evening Louise was presented with the Chancellor’s Rising Star Award, this annual award honours an early career academic appointed to the University within the last five years. Louise was selected as the 2015 awardee for her contribution to teaching, research and industrial engagement in the field of Synthetic Biology… and is over the moon!
